September is National Self Improvement Month. So, what do you want to improve about yourself? Maybe eat a healthier diet, exercise more, read more books, get recognition at work, start learning a new language, take an educational course?
There are two keys to successful self-improvement:
Key # 1 ~ Discover what you really want.
We live in a world that is never satisfied with the status quo and that can push us into activities and commitments that we think we “should” do to improve ourselves. But the truly important issue is discovering what you really “want” to do. I invite you to ask yourself these questions before you commit to anything.
What holds meaning for me?
What do I value?
What will bring more enthusiasm and joy to my life?
Once you answer these questions, you can begin to consider self-improvement options that fit your desires and sensibilities. Enthusiasm is a catalyst for growth. Growth is the companion to change. Change, steeped in your personal values, brings self-improvement, which challenges the status quo … Your Way!
Key # 2 ~ Take small steps on your self-improvement journey.
It’s exciting to come into greater awareness of personal values, and your self-improvement list may be enthusiastically burgeoning! However, enthusiasm run amuck can be a recipe for failure. Enthusiasm with a plan can be your tool for success. Now, ask yourself these questions:
What from my list of options do I want to pursue right now?
What amount of time and finances do I have to support this activity?
What steps can I take, no matter how small, to put me in the position to do what I desire?
These questions help you consider more broadly what you want to do, and it may take some outside-the-box thinking to make it happen. Think big about your self-improvement plan while, at the same time, concentrate on choosing small, do-able steps to get you where you want to go.
Taking on too much, too fast often cause abandonment of a desired goal, whereas a series of well planned, small steps that are successful build on one another. This bolsters confidence and makes the journey so much more enjoyable!
