The Journal: A Tool for Reflection & Creation

As a proponent of journaling, I believe that our written words take our thoughts, which often circle obsessively in our minds, out of that inner loop to a place outside of ourselves. On the page, we can engage with our own ideas and expressions from a different viewpoint.

Some things we write are the minutia of our day’s activities, which release the energy from our brains and bodies so we can re-center and balance ourselves. Other things are what Virginia Woolf called “the shivering fragments” – key thoughts and images that take us to some deeper understanding or open the door to artistic creation. I review my old journals on a regular basis, using color-coded post-its to mark pieces of writing that offer ideas, creative inspiration and, often, comfort.

In my new video series on journaling, I tap into these insights and share them in short, thoughtful YouTube clips. I have to say that I am often surprised by what I’ve written because there is so much wisdom in it! Wisdom that I did not think I had. But, my Higher Self does have such wisdom and she has much to tell me if I allow her to speak. Yours does, too. And the videos are my encouragement to you to seek out your own insights on the page.

Here’s an old journal entry I found marked with a yellow post-it, which means a “creative opportunity” – the beginnings of a poem or a piece of creative writing. Whether or not I craft it into something more than what I found on the page, this little piece of organic writing spoke its “life wisdom” to me …

I could say that the whole of me knows the order of things. That would be true if I believe in the Divine Matrix. And I do, but still, in this human form, I am parts and pieces not yet aligned together so I can see the biggest picture … A baby pigeon floating beak down in the fountain blurs my vision, yet radiant fuchsia of bougainvillea bursting along the stone fence opens my understanding … This world requires a patient walk, a willingness to keep trying.

I have no idea what prompted me to write this several years ago. What I do know is that I “allowed” it to come forth from my inner being and, for today, I discovered awareness and courage in my own words.

Your inner being, your Higher Self, is waiting to talk to you. Give it the opportunity to share its wisdom with you.
